Front Nine Photos

  • Hole 1
A slight draw off the tee is a big help here. The green is fairly flat but has bunkers either side and a bank which slopes away at the at the back of it.
  • Hole 2
A tricky par three and although the green has been enlarged, it is still a difficult green to hit. The bunker on the left front edge gathers balls and the proximity of the trees on both sides makes this a tough tee shot.
  • Hole 3
Stroke index one for the men and rightly so. You cannot see the green so just aim for the top of the hill. The green tends to run from the left to the right and slightly away from you making the second shot difficult.
  • Hole 4
You have to be prepared to carry the brook with your tee shot as laying up can leave you with a nasty downhill lie. The bunker guarding the front of the green is around 6 feet high.
  • Hole 5
Another hole where a slight draw will help although you will need to be middle to right of the fairway to take the Oak Tree near the green out of play. The pond left front of the green gathers many a mishit shot.
  • Hole 6
A straight forward if tight hole. The key thing is to hit the fairway with your drive and don’t be too long with your second to the green otherwise you will be in the brook.
  • Hole 7
The recently remodelled par 3 looks innocuous. However it slopes from back to front presenting tricky putts for those who go beyond the flag. Uphill to the green so you may want one more club than normal for the distance.
  • Hole 8
A power fade is ideal off the tee unless you can hit a long high draw. A few yards to the right of the marker post will usually cost you a shot to get back to the fairway.
  • Hole 9
There plenty of room on the fairway, it just looks like there isn’t. The undulating fairway can provide some tricky lies on the way to the green. The green slopes uphill away from you and is guarded by bunkers on both sides. Beware the OAB on the right.

Our Course

Coventry Hearsall Golf Club was founded in 1894 and moved to its present location in 1911. The course boasts many mature trees along its fairways. Although relatively short by modern standards at 6001 yards, the course is testing and demands straight hitting to avoid punishment. The stream running through the course provides further food for thought for the golfer on several holes. The 444 yard 18th hole provides a formidable finishing hole.

Back Nine Photos

  • Hole 10
The danger with this par 3 is hitting the two pot bunkers either side of the front entrance to the green.
  • Hole 11
You have to be left of the fairway or hit a long staight drive to have the best chance of hitting the green with your second. You cannot relax once on the green as it is rated the most difficult on the course to putt on.
  • Hole 12
This hole is in reach for long hitters with a gentle draw. However, leave your drive right and you will almost certainly be out of bounds if not in a neighbour’s garden. Discretion is often the best option for getting your par.
  • Hole 13
Another hole for the long hitters to weigh up the risk and reward of going for the green. For the rest of us, laying up in front of the brook is the best option. The green slopes steeply at the front so make sure you get your shot up to the flag.
  • Hole 14
The first 150 yards of the drive path feels extremely narrow, especially when you have a good score going. The stream runs down the right for the first part of the fairway and the trees guarding both sides have been known to help a ball into it.
  • Hole 15
Get a good drive away on this par 5 and you could be over the brook with your second. Make sure you get to the same level as the flag with your shot to the green otherwise you will have a tougher putt than you want.
  • Hole 16
Take aim between the two slight mounds on the brow of the hill as you cannot see the green from the tee. Beware of the two bunkers just off the fairway in the landing area, and the two further on some 50 yards from the green.
  • Hole 17
The last of the par 3s. A small green with a narrow entrance guarded by bunkers on both sides.
  • Hole 18
A great finishing hole. A 444 yard par 4 demanding a straight drive to avoid the trees. The undulations on the fairway can provide some awkward lies. The two fairway bunkers 100 yards or so from the green probably affect the average length hitters more than the long ones.

Meet the Pro

Mike TarnMike Tarn turned Professional in 1975 working at Ascot Hall GC in the North East.

He moved to the Midlands at the age of 17 working as an assistant Professional at the Forest of Arden Golf and Country Club for three years before moving to the John Reay Golf Center in Coventry, during this period he also spent time working in Leicester, and Atherstone Golf Club for over 12 months.

During the six years he spent with John Reay Mike became PGA qualified.
In 1985 he moved back to the Forst of Arden as Head Professional. Over the following ten years he saw major changes to the course which was changed to European tour Standards to hold two English Opens while he was there.

The old clubhouse was changed to a 150 bedroom hotel with full leisure facilities. In 1994 Mike became the professional at Coventry Hearsall Golf Club. He continued to run the shop at the Forest of Arden until April 1995 concentrating soley on Hearsall Golf Club.
Mike has enjoyed his time at Hearsall and has been very active with all competitions held throughout the years he has been with us.

Golf LessonOver the years Mike has built up a strong relationship with our members, his expertise and knowledge of the golf swing has helped a large number of people play better golf.

There are a number of classes that Mike holds as well as individual one to one coaching, every Sunday Mike can be seen on the practice area with a dozen or so young aspiring golfers and this is a great opportunity for young people not only to learn the skills of golf but to improve their social aptitude in a safe and supervised environment. Golf is a disciplined sport and whilst we improve our technique the fun side of golf is paramount in Mike's structured courses. This leads to a greater fulfillment of the junior and sets them in good stead for the future.
